Building and sustaining trails in Two Harbors

A community powered nonprofit supporting year round trail access on Minnesota’s North Shore.

The Two Harbors Trail Alliance works with volunteers, land managers, and the community to build, maintain, and protect trails for hiking, biking, skiing, and year round outdoor access.

What We Do

Trail Building & Maintenance
We plan, construct, and care for non-motorized trails, focusing on sustainability, safety, and long term stewardship across the trail systems we support.

Trail Systems We Steward
We steward the Erkki Harju system of ski and recreation trails and the Bigfoot system of snowshoe and fat bike trails, ensuring lasting access through ongoing care, planning, and collaboration.

Mountain Biking, Hiking & Skiing Access
We maintain the Lake County Demonstration Forest trail system in partnership with Lake County, supporting mountain biking, hiking, skiing, and fat biking across all seasons.

Advocacy & Future Trail Development
We advocate for expanded trail access and are leading the Two Harbors Trail Center Vision Plan, a community driven effort to connect trail systems and create a shared hub for Nordic skiers, snowshoers, mountain bikers, hikers, and trail runners.

“We serve as stewards of local trail systems, working collaboratively to care for existing trails while planning for the future.”

Why Trails Matter in Two Harbors

Trails connect people to place. They support physical and mental health, bring families outdoors together, and create year round opportunities for recreation in our community.

Well maintained trail systems also strengthen the local economy, helping attract visitors while improving quality of life for those who call Two Harbors home. These benefits only exist when trails are thoughtfully planned, responsibly managed, and cared for over time.

Building Trails for Community & Future

We encourage youth to recreate in healthy, active ways and support opportunities for families to play together outdoors.

Our vision is to develop a world class trail system that strengthens quality of life for residents while attracting visitors to Two Harbors year round.

This work aligns with the goals of the City of Two Harbors, Silver Creek Township, Lake County, local schools, and community partners.

Looking Ahead

The Two Harbors Trail Alliance is advocating for a community driven Trail Center Vision that would bring together a multi-purpose trailhead, bike park, and mountain bike flow trails in Two Harbors.

The proposed Trail Center would connect the Erkki Harju Trails, Bigfoot Trails, and a new bike park near Fairgrounds Road—creating a shared hub for Nordic skiers, snowshoers, mountain bikers, hikers, and trail runners.
